Newham Life

Volunteers at Alternatives counsel women facing unexpected pregnancy sometimes in terrible circumstances. They support young women who are entirely alone through pregnancy and bringing up their babies. They make God’s compassionate love real to people who have no other family to support them, and we are privileged to see lives amazingly transformed.

Like R, a 19-year old with 3-year old triplets. She so appreciates the parenting support and encouragement of the We Are Family club that she starts getting the family ready at 7.30 in the morning to be there at 11. For a long time it was the only place she felt able to leave the house for. We also help R by going along with her to official appointments, to help take care of the children. R came to the UK as an asylum seeker with her mother, who died six weeks after her children were born, and she has no other family of her own. Happily she now has legal status, but she lives in unsuitable accommodation and is about to be made homeless.

“M” cried for a month after having a termination, which she immediately regretted. A few months on she is working through ‘The Journey” post-abortion course, and would like to go on to help others avoid the pain she is experiencing. She felt rushed into a decision when was desperately sick and had no friends to talk to, and says,“If only I had known you were there….”

We in turn count on the support of our “wider family” who pray for our work and provide the practical and financial support that means we can keep on being there – and make sure women in need of help know that Alternatives is there to help them make the decision is right for them. Would you like to be part of that Wider Family?

We are looking for 100 people to commit to praying for us and supporting us with £5 a month. Our work has grown incredibly in the last year, and we are delighted that through the schools work and the We Are Family club we are reaching so many more young people in our borough. But we really need to establish secure funding for our core work of the Centre, especially as more and more women are coming to us for help. 100 gifts of £5 a month would enable us to have the centre open five days a week (not including salary costs), so more women could find help when they need it.

If you share the vision of Alternatives and would like to support us, we would be very grateful.

Finally, just to say that Alternatives had great fun at our annual fair on Saturday 5 May and raised £1,255!
